Over the years I’ve collected almost 250 riddles from various places for use in roleplaying games. Here’s the list for other people to use:
Not really a riddle in the classical sense, but one of my all-time favourites:
- Why do the French only have one egg for breakfast?
Because one egg is un oeuf (enough)!

- It is greater than God and more evil than the devil. The poor have it, the rich need it and if you eat it you’ll die. What is it?

The letter ‘n’. - The one who makes it, sells it. The one who buys it, never uses it. The one that uses it never knows that he’s using it. What is it?
A coffin - The more you have of it, the less you see. What is it?
Darkness - What has a head, a tail, is brown, and has no legs?
A penny. - What English word has three consecutive double letters?
Bookkeeper. - What’s black when you get it, red when you use it, and white when you’re all through with it?
Charcoal. - You throw away the outside and cook the inside. Then you eat the outside and throw away the inside. What did you eat?
An ear of corn. - I am always hungry,
I must always be fed,
The finger I touch,
Will soon turn red
Fire - Ripped from my mother’s womb,
Beaten and burned,
I become a blood thirsty killer.
What am I?
Iron ore - I know a word of letters three. Add two, and fewer there will be!
Few - I give you a group of three. One is sitting down, and will never get up. The second eats as much as is given to him, yet is always hungry. The third goes away and never returns.
Stove, fire, smoke - I have four legs but no tail. Usually I am heard only at night. What am I?
A frog. The frog is an amphibian in the order Anura (meaning “tail-less”) and usually makes noises at night during its mating season. - Half-way up the hill, I see thee at last, lying beneath me with thy sounds and sights — A city in the twilight, dim and vast, with smoking roofs, soft bells, and gleaming lights.
The past. (Longfellow) - When young, I am sweet in the sun.
When middle-aged, I make you gay.

DAVID (Roman numerals) - It cannot be seen, it weighs nothing, but when put into a barrel, it makes it lighter. What is it?

Lightning - You saw me where I never was and where I could not be. And yet within that very place, my face you often see. What am I?
A reflection - Say my name and I disappear. What am I?
Silence - What is it that after you take away the whole, some still remains?
Wholesome - A box without hinges, lock or key, yet golden treasure lies within. What is it?
An egg - Forward I’m heavy, but backwards I’m not. What am I?
Ton - Why doesn’t a mountain covered with snow catch cold?
Because it has a snowcap 🙂 - I can be long, or I can be short.

The letter d. - Kings and lords and christians raised them
Since they stand for higher powers
Yet few of them would stand, I’m certain,

A tower. - Soft and fragile is my skin, I get my growth in mud
I’m dangerous as much as pretty, for if not careful, I draw blood.
A thorn - Three brothers share a family sport: A non-stop marathon
The oldest one is fat and short And trudges slowly on
The middle brother’s tall and slim And keeps a steady pace
The youngest runs just like the wind, a speeding through the race
“He’s young in years, we let him run,” the other brothers say
“‘Cause though he’s surely number one, he’s second, in a way.”
The hands on a clock (hour, minute, second). - It’s true I bring serenity,
And hang around the stars
But yet I live in misery;
You’ll find me behind bars
With thieves and villains I consort
In prison I’ll be found
But I would never go to court,
Unless there’s more than one
The letter s - I am a box that holds keys without locks, yet they can unlock your soul. What am I?
A piano. - There once was a strange man who loved wordplay, he had a very important and successful business that would take insect shipments from all across the world and distribute them to zoos across the US.
ImportANT - There is one word that stands the test of time and holds fast to the center of everything. Though everyone will try at least once in their life to move around this word, but in fact, unknowingly, they use it every moment of the day. Young or old, awake or in sleep, human or animal, this word stands fast. It belongs to everyone, to all living things, but no one can master it. The word is?
Gravity - My days are in the summer
When you’ll eat me when I’m hot

Dog. Dog days, hot dog, dog pound, dog fight. - My first is twice in apple but not once in tart. My second is in liver but not in heart. My third is in giant and also in ghost. Whole I’m best when I am roast. What am I?
A pig. - What gets wetter as it dries?
A towel - This is a most unusual paragraph. How quickly can you find out what is so unusual about it? It looks so ordinary you’d think nothing was wrong with it – and in fact, nothing is wrong with it. It is unusual though. Why? Study it, think about it, and you may find out. Try to do it without coaching. If you work at it for a bit it will dawn on you. So jump to it and try your skill at figuring it out. Good luck – don’t blow your cool!

The four suits in a deck of standard playing cards. The Spade is a gardener’s tool. The Diamond is the hardest gem to break. “Little Girl and Queen” is a Mother Goose rhyme, in which the Queen gave the girl a large diamond for picking the Queen some roses.The Heart bonds with the mind to form love. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.The Club, or Clover, is three dots connected around a stem. - I am a word of meanings three.
Three ways of spelling me there be.
The first is an odour, a smell if you will.
The second some money, but not in a bill.
The third is past tense, a method of passing things on or around.
Can you tell me now, what these words are, that have the same sound?
Scent, cent, sent - It’s red, blue, purple and green, no one can reach it, not even the queen. What is it?
A rainbow. - What question can you never honestly answer yes to?
Are you asleep? (or dead) - What has a neck and no head, two arms but no hands?
A shirt (or sweater, jacket etc) - I live in water

A pearl. They’re found underwater. Removing the head (p) leaves Earl, a guy who could be at your door. Removing the tail (l) leaves pear, a fruit and if you cut both off you’re left with ear, which is with you because it’s attached to your head. - Feed me and I live, give me drink and I die. What am I?
Fire. - What begins and has no end? What is the ending of all that begins?
The best answer I’ve heard is death. It ends all that begins, and there’s no end to death. Another answer along the same lines is decay. - A man went to the hardware store to buy items for his house.
1 would cost $.25
12 would cost $.50
122 would cost $.75
When he left the store he had spent $.75, what did he buy?
House numbers - What makes a loud noise when changing its jacket, becomes larger but weighs less?
Popcorn - The more you take, the more you leave behind.
Footsteps - I am a word of 5 letters and people eat me. If you remove the first letter I become a form of energy. Remove the first two and I’m needed to live. Scramble the last 3 and you can drink me. What am I?
Wheat, heat, eat, tea - Before any changes I’m a garlic or spice. My first is altered and I’m a hand-warming device. My second is changed and I’m trees in full bloom. The next letter change makes a deathly old tomb. Change the fourth to make a fruit of the vine. Change the last for a chart plotted with lines. What was I? What did I become? What did I turn out to be?
Clove, glove, grove, grave, grape, graph - A woman shoots her husband, then holds him under water for five minutes. Finally, she hangs him. Five minutes later they enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be?
She took a photo of him and developed it in the dark room. - Remove six letters from this sequence to reveal a familiar English word. BSAINXLEATNTEARS

I have a riddle it’s quite easy: “I am a person, you might have a chance of meeting me in one place, I am special and I was killed but I came back to life. who am I?”
Here’s an awesome riddle,
You have died and are making your way to heaven, but there is one final test you have to complete before going to heaven. If you get it wrong you go to hell
“your walking along the path when you notice a building with two doors one ether side. You know that one door leads to hell and one leads to heaven. The doors are I identical. Guarding each door are identical twins, one always tells the truth ( cannot lie) and one always tells a lie (cannot tell the truth) you do not know which is which. You can ask one of the guards one question. What do you ask and what do you do with the answer.”
I do Know the answer but try getting it yourself.
You ask them what the other would say was the correct door. (They would both point at the same door).
the honest one would point to the right door but the liar would point at the wrong (the other door) so wouldn’t they be pointing at the wrong doors?
You kick one of them and ask, ‘does that hurt?’. If he says no, you go to the other door. If he says yes, go through that door.
You kick one and ask, “Does that hurt?” If he says no, he’s lying and go through the other door.

I would ask, Are you guarding a door?
You would ask, what the other guard would say is the door to hell. Both would point to the door to heaven. If you ask the liar: The other one, meaning the one who says the truth, would obviously point to the right door. But the liar of course tells you he would give you the other door as the one to hell. If you ask the one who is turthful, he would say the liar would give you the door to heaven as the one leading to hell. So whomever you ask, you get pointed the “wrong” door, which you know is the door to heaven.
does the identical twin who never lies guard the door to heaven and the liar to hell?
You ask either one what the other brother would say is the correct door and then you go through the opposite door!
If you happened to ask the brother that always lies what the other brother would say, he would lie and point to the door to hell.
If you ask the brother that always tells the truth what the other brother would say is the door to heaven, again the answer would be the door to hell. So you go through the other door.
Voila!
You ask one of the guards: “are you guards?”. If they say yes, go through their door and of the say no, go through the other. Hope this is true!
Just ask one of them, can you see me? Probably he answers no but its sure he can see you as you are right with him. Then ask the other one, can you see me? He’s truthful so he says Yes. The one who said Yes just ask him what the door to Heaven is and walk in confidently. 🙂
I would ask him whether my blood group is O positive. If he says no, I’ll choose the opposite door

Well, you can make sand castles from it, the mountain bit I don’t understand, but helping them see – sand is one of the ingredients of glass together with potash; heat them together to a very high temperature and they melt to form glass.
you can make sand castles out of it. sand can erode mountains. if it gets in your eyes it makes you blind. san can create class which is used in classes which helps people to see.
